Children available for adoption include healthy and special needs boys and girls, generally between the ages of 22 months and 8 years. These children reside in orphanages. Potential adoptive parents must be between fifteen and forty-five years older than the child. After adoption, Bulgaria requests regular post-adoption reports. The U.S. Department of State encourages all adoptive parents to comply with Bulgaria's request, which will give Bulgaria positive experiences with U.S. Citizens. In 2011, U.S. citizens adopted approximately 75 children from Bulgaria.
